Avantir: The Beginning

It began for me when I was young. My dad would read me bedtime stories about this far off land. I was lucky because not only could I listen to stories from books, but I had a chance to have my dad tell me his stories.

It wouldn’t be until much later that I would realize the extent of what he’d created when he built this world. When he died due to complications from Lupus, as the only child, I inherited all of his writing. Including the Avantir Chronicles and the Asbalnian Tales, which had all been written on a portable typewriter that my dad borrowed off an army buddy. At the time I thought it was just stories. Until I began going through the papers to scan them in to the computer.

Among the stories there were songs and poems which fed into the history of the world. Then I came across a duotang, which was filled with strange languages. There were multiple languages in the binder including Çymrutha (the language of the Elder Ones, also known as Elves). At that moment, I realised that I would need to do some research.

One of the first things that I did was organize all of the manuscripts that I could find into chronological order based on the timeline that my dad wrote out (Thanks Dad!). The next thing I will be working on will be organizing all of the people, places and things. As I do that I’ll write it up here.

I will also make sure that I try to include pictures and diagrams as I go. But for today I’ll leave you with this little piece of prose written in one of the languages of Avantir along with its translation below (I like to think it was written for my mother):

To speak of Ardan the Grim is to speak of many things. One must tell of how he was the last in a line of men who had stood for far Tharid. A line descended from Ardan the Fair, who left Asbaln that there should be no quarrels with his brother, Randell of Avantir. Both of them being sons of the famous Guardian of the Sword of Avantir, Rorick. Wyrta the seer spoke to him in these words: "In the twentieth year, on spring's first day, seek a path to the West away. Go to the land of the Silver Hair, for thy fate does await thee there." Years after Rorick and Conel rode forth to free the land of Asbaln from the barbaric tribes, comes one man who will ride forth to save the kingdom and he will wear... The Crystal Crown.
